Courtney Peppernell’s Pillow Thoughts is an ideal comfort read. It is a lengthy collection of poetry and prose served to not only guide you through some of life’s most intense emotions, but to empathise with you and be an understanding friend.
Pillow Thoughts is divided into several sections, covering a range of themes including love, loss, heartbreak, loneliness, and soul-searching. The implementation of these themed sections allow the reader to dip into one they feel is needed in that moment, rather than having to read the poems in order.
Peppernell’s writing flows effortlessly as she draws upon these raw emotions, allowing for an easy yet potent read. While some of the poems were particularly personal, as I anticipated from the intimate title, I admired Peppernell’s authenticity and candid approach, which in turn enhanced the meaning of the poems.
However, I cannot say that I thoroughly enjoyed all the poems in this collection. I felt that many poems and pieces of prose lacked substance, were filled with cliché nuances and many poems were very similar to each other.
Unfortunately, Pillow Thoughts did not leave a long-lasting impression on me, though nonetheless it is still an enjoyable collection to read in those quiet moments of life.
